Commercial Pool Problems
Nearly all pool shutdowns reported were related to water quality issues. Hotels and Motels have the most reported water quality violations.
National Association of County and City Health Officials did the study with health departments to determine which violations health inspectors see the most. In particular, if you are a pool operator, you will definitely want to know what health inspectors are looking for and how to keep your facility in compliance year ‘round.
In the published survey, where health inspectors were answering on different questions, they are saying that 75% of them shut down a commercial pool within the past two years.
Top reasons for pool shutdowns:
- Low sanitizing level/low chlorine (90%)
- PH out of balance (61%)
- Cloudy water or turbidity (53%)
- High stabilizer level (14%)
The survey also found that 70% of health inspectors hold pool operator certificate, which is recommended to have it, but not required in all counties. The survey indicates that the majority of ordinance enforcers also are up to speed on Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act.
Almost 80% of health inspectors say they always check drain covers and fittings for compliance. 100% of them said they test free and combined chlorine and PH levels. 46% of them said they check chemical feeders to see if they are working.
Nearly all pool shutdowns reported were related to water quality issues. Hotels and Motels have the most reported water quality violations. On other side, pools at schools and universities are a bright spot, operators at these facilities are with the most knowledge, and can be credited with maintaining the safest pools.
Premier Aquatics always keep their pools safe, having certified pool operators on duty.
Remember, safety first!
